This weekend Jen flew down from St Louis to Houston and we went through to New Orleans for the weekend. Unfortunately the weekend wasn't as good as it could have been due to bad traffic and Jen still feeling unwell.
We left on Friday just after 2pm, and what should have been a 5 hour drive ended up being about 7.5 hours thanks to the heavy traffic and numerous crashes caused most likely by the fact that drivers down here are downright dangerous. By the time we arrived in Friday it wasn't worth doing much so we figure out what to do on Saturday.
On Saturday we decided to go on a swamp tour. This involved a 45 minute bus drive to the tour start point and on this we got to see some of the areas that are still recovering from hurricane Katrina. On the tour we were on a small metal boat with about a dozen others and Captain Ted. Captain Ted is a Cajun and grew up in the swamps, he was quite a character and had a few interesting stories to tell us, we also got to see some wildlife including alligators.
After we returned to the city we had a look round the shops and had some lunch but unfortunately that was all Jen could manage as she was feeling sick. On Sunday we travelled back to Houston so that Jen could catch her flight home.
The hotel we stayed in N'awlins was in the french quarter, which is where Mardi Gras is held, one street in particular is quite famous/infamous, Bourbon Street. It had lots of bars, loud music, gentlemans clubs etc but smelled absolutely terrible, it had a constant smell of puke and dog poo, not nice.
The drive back was interesting as it skirted the edge of Lake Pontchartrain and went through the swamps, which we didn't see on the drive in on Friday.
